For the Arctic Air Expedition 2024 team, this is also a personal and intimate quest to revisit the places that Gino Watkins once stood, where he traveled and where he died, and to re-visit the challenges, places and sights he and his teammates experienced in 1930.
Dave King: Expedition Leader : Dave King has spent a lifetime exploring and living in the Arctic as a professional mountain guide, dog musher and expedition kayaker. Guiding sea kayak expeditions in Summer and teaching specialist Polar travel skills in winter. Dave also works within the film industry providing logistics to production companies working on projects in extreme locations and climates. Passionate about the history of Arctic exploration and the future of Arctic environmental integrity, Dave lives with his Veterinarian partner and 50 Alaskan Huskies in Northern Sweden, Lapland. www.polarquestexpeditions.com
Sergio Zárate : Skipper : Sergio was born in Argentina, and has been living in Ibiza for the last 20 years, where he had developed an exciting career as a professional skipper on power & sailing boats, becoming an “all range” sailor, competing in demanding regattas like the Rolex Fastnet Race or the Rolex Middle Sea Race, cruising and yachting the whole Mediterranean, and successfully taking on several ocean crossing passages in the Atlantic and the Pacific.
Johan Wiklund : Pilot : Johan is a 47-year-old Swedish airline captain at SAS, flying out of Copenhagen, Denmark and living in Sweden. Adventure is nothing new to him, he has a military background from the Swedish submarine force, and was also trained as a helicopter pilot in the Swedish Army. In 2000-2001, he and his brother sailed round-trip across the Atlantic in a 35-foot sloop, the Röde Orm. His passion is to build, fly and maintain antique aeroplanes, specializing in English “Moths”, a series of small biplanes designed by Sir Geoffrey de Havilland and manufactured between 1924 and 1935.
